Does the Prado have a history? Father Antoine Chevrier (1826-1879), founder of what was to become the Secular Institute, was a well-known figure among Lyon's 19th-century clergy. His commitment to the working-class populations of the Guillotière district and his visceral attachment to the religious education of disadvantaged young people made him a pioneer of social Catholicism in the capital of Gaules. But what do we really know about the priests and sisters of Prado after the death of their founder? What orientations, achievements, questions and accommodations have marked a century and a half of insertion into contemporary society in works of education, formation, evangelisation and missionary presence? For the first time, a group of historians has attempted to retrace the chronological stages, governance practices and geography of the establishment of male and female communities around the world. Access to hitherto little-exploited archives has made it possible, for example, to learn more about the posterity of Antoine Chevrier's photographs, the personality of Mgr Alfred Ancel, Superior General between 1942 and 1971, the place of the workers' mission, and the growing internationalisation of the Pradosian family, from Chile to North Africa, from Mediterranean Europe to Korea and Madagascar.
